The AACTA Award for Best Young Actor is an award presented by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) to a male or female actor, under the age of eighteen, in a lead, supporting or guest role, for a feature film, television programme or short film.[1] Prior to the establishment of the Academy in 2011, the award was presented by the Australian Film Institute (AFI) at the annual Australian Film Institute Awards (more commonly known as the AFI Awards) from 1991-2010.[2] In 1991, the award was known as the award for "Best Juvenile Performance", and from 1992-2010, it was known as the "Young Actors Award".[2] From 1991-1999, the award was presented as a special award to an individual, but from 2000, onwards it is a competitive award.[3] Additionally, from 2006-2008, the award was accompanied with a cash prize of A$20,000.[2]
